BJU Engineering Team Wins $50,000 Prize
From the classroom to a nation-wide NASA competition, BJU engineering students are applying what they’ve learned to solve real-world challenges and earning national recognition in the process. Led by engineering faculty member Dr. Bill Lovegrove, an 11-member team developed an innovative recycling process for future lunar missions that earned a $50,000 award in NASA’s LunaRecycle Challenge. Lessons from Ground Zero
Retired Navy Captain and Chaplain Steve Brown, a graduate of BJU, was the guest speaker in a special chapel service honoring of the 25th anniversary of 9/11. When Captain Brown entered BJU as a student, he had no idea God would eventually call Him to chaplain ministry. He exhorted the students, saying, “Don’t worry about what’s after BJU. Trust the Lord, and He will show the ‘what’ at the right time. And you will rejoice when He does.”
Following the events of 9/11, Captain Brown was sent to Ground Zero as part of a chaplain emergency response team. Every day for 15 days, he and his team served with unrestricted access to the site. While their primary mission was to minister to Coast Guard personnel, it quickly expanded to law enforcement, firefighters, and family members of 9/11 victims. To frame his chapel message, Captain Brown chose Luke 13:1-5 as “a reminder to us of the awful suffering of calamity” and that “God wants us to remember. And He wants us to learn from it.” On this anniversary of 9/11, Captain Brown encouraged students to reflect on the fragility of life: “The peace, hope, and unity that all sinners need is found in Jesus Christ. . . Don’t waste your life on that which is insignificant.”

Rare Torah Scroll Donated to BJU Seminary
During the ceremony, Seminary Dean, Dr. Neal Cushman, BJU President, Dr. Bruce McAllister, Seminary Professor, Dr. Ken Casillas, and a representative from Logos reflected on the scroll’s history, significance, and preservation. The Torah contains the first five books of the Hebrew Bible and measures more than 98 feet in length. Handwritten by a single scribe on unsplit calfskin, it was produced according to the ancient Yemenite scribal tradition and remains in remarkable condition despite its age.
Dr. Casillas shared the scroll’s likely journey from Yemen to Israel during the mass migrations of Yemeni Jews in the twentieth century, including Operation Magic Carpet following World War II. The scroll eventually became part of the renowned Ben David Collection in Israel before being acquired by a donor in 2018 and later gifted to BJU Seminary.
Guests at the unveiling viewed approximately 40 feet of the scroll, a vivid reminder of God’s faithful preservation of His Word through generations. The scroll is permanently housed at the Seminary, kept in a custom black walnut cabinet handcrafted by Dr. Earl Nutz, retired BJU professor.
“We are deeply grateful for the generous donation of this remarkable 16th-century Torah scroll from Yemen, a powerful testimony to God’s faithfulness in preserving His Word,” said Cushman. “As a steward of this treasured artifact, BJU Seminary is committed to using it to further our mission of uncompromised, next-level theological instruction.”

This October, the Bruins soccer team welcomes Pensacola Christian College to Greenville for another chapter of our friendly rivalry. Because PCC only visits campus every other fall, this is a special opportunity to cheer on the Bruins at home.
The matchup carries a bit of shared history as well. Pensacola Christian College, founded by Arlin and Beka Horton, recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. With BJU in the midst of its Centennial Celebration, this game offers a unique moment to appreciate God’s use of two institutions to influence generations of Christian students.
Of course, every good rivalry comes with a little history, so we can’t resist noting that the name on the Hortons’ diplomas says Bob Jones University. We’ll leave the rest of that conversation to the fans in the stands. Go Bruins!

Class Notes
Armentrout, Rich ’85 ’03 has been appointed chief financial officer of Sobrius, a Virginia behavioral health provider. Armentrout’s experience overseeing complex behavioral health portfolios, improving operational performance, and supporting clinical teams will help Sobrius expand.
Schiefer Dr., Allyson (Jenkins) ’17 has joined Goshen Physicians OB/GYN. She earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from Indiana University School of Medicine and completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Western Michigan University.
Vowels Dr., Mark ’83, faculty member in the School of Theology & Global Leadership at BJU, completed his PhD in Intercultural Studies from Columbia International University in August of 2026.
